A Pole Barn Chicken Coop, One Year Later
Mike built a small pole barn, turned it into a chicken coop, and a year later he'd build it again. What he'd change has almost nothing to do with the structure. It's water, weather, and a couple of interior features the chickens flatly refuse to use.

That second visit is the useful part. Anyone can show you a finished building. Far fewer people come back after a winter and tell you which decisions they regret.
The first thing he paid to fix was drainage
A year in, the item at the top of his punch list isn't structural. He's got someone coming out to put gutters on both sides of the building, because rain sheets off the roof and, in his words, is "really kicking the mud up back this way."
This is worth sitting with, because it's the single most transferable thing in the video. The building is fine. The ground next to the building is the problem. A pole barn roof is a large uninterrupted surface, and every drop that lands on it exits along two lines on the ground unless you give it somewhere else to go.
Gutters are also the kind of thing that gets dropped from a quote without anyone noticing. They're not part of the shell, they're rarely in the base package, and they feel optional right up until the first heavy spring rain turns your doorway into a mud pit.
The door moved with the weather
The second fix was the people-door. It was hung in a way that worked fine when he built it, and then, as he puts it, "as time went by and the weather changed it was too close." It got hard to open. He re-adjusted it and it's been fine since.
Nobody warns first-time builders about this. Wood moves seasonally, the building settles, and a door that swings perfectly in November can bind in July. It isn't a defect and it isn't a sign the build went wrong.
Plan on re-hanging or adjusting at least one door in the first year. It's a fifteen-minute job if you expect it and an alarming one if you don't.
He built things the chickens ignore
Inside, he ran small boards up to the perches so the birds could walk up to roost. They don't use them. A commenter had already told him as much: "they're not rats, Mike." He agrees now. Once the birds got their size they just fly straight up to the perch, and the ramps sit there unused.
That's a small waste of lumber and a large lesson. He spec'd an interior feature based on a reasonable guess about how the building would be used, and the guess was wrong in a way no amount of planning would have caught. The only thing that resolves that question is watching the building get used.
The shell was right the first time. Everything he's still fixing is at the edges: where the water goes, how the door moves, and what happens inside.
What he'd keep
The retrospective isn't all corrections. Several decisions have clearly earned out:
- Storage designed in from the start. The space under the nest boxes was built to hold shavings, tucked out of the way. A coop and a supply room under one roof is the whole argument for using a pole barn here instead of a prefab coop.
- Building for predators, not for chickens. Raccoons and coyotes drove the lockup design. He calls the finished building "Fort Knox," and the birds get closed in every night.
- Cleanout access. A door positioned so the coop can be mucked straight out to the outside. His wife does the cleaning, and it's the feature he mentions her being happiest with.
- The planning time. His own stated conclusion is that the months spent thinking through how the building would actually work is what made it work. Given how few of his regrets are structural, that holds up.
Worth noting what's on the list but still not done a year later: latches to hold the nest box lids open, and a two-by-six shelf along one wall for egg cartons. The building has been in full use that entire time. It's producing 12 to 15 eggs a day from a flock of over 30 birds. The punch list simply stopped being urgent once the thing worked.
If you're building a small one
The lessons here scale up past chickens. A small pole barn is still a pole barn, and the failure modes are the same ones a 40x60 has:
- Price the drainage with the building, not after it. Gutters, downspouts, and where the water actually goes once it's in them. Ask explicitly whether they're in the quote.
- Expect to adjust doors in year one. Budget the time, not money.
- Underbuild the interior on purpose. Perches, shelves, ramps, and dividers are cheap to add later and annoying to remove. Build the shell, use it for a season, then finish it based on what you learned.
- Overbuild the storage. It's the part of the footprint people consistently regret cutting.
