He Built the Same 30x50 Pole Barn Twice. Here's What Changed

The most useful thing in this shop tour is what the owner replaced. His old pole barn is 30x50. His new one is also 30x50.

"It's actually not any bigger," he says. "It's just this one is taller."

That is the whole lesson in one line. He did not need more floor. He needed the things floor area cannot give him, and every one of them was decided before the building went up.

The four things he changed

  1. A 14 foot sidewall, for head space. Same footprint, more room above it.
  2. A door at both ends. Two 12 foot overheads on the front, and another 12 foot on the back, making a pull-through bay. He can roll a car in off the hill, drag it through with a truck and a chain, and drive out the other side. A 10 foot door on the side covers a parking spot, where he deliberately spent less.
  3. A slab thick enough to take a car lift.
  4. Spray foam, which he says made the building "a thousand times better in here, even when it's hot."

Only the fourth of those can be added later.

The concrete is the decision you cannot revisit

This is the part worth stopping on. The reason he has a second barn at all is that the first one's slab is too thin to anchor a lift.

He had a choice: tear out and repour the old slab, or build again. He built again.

A storage slab and a shop slab are not the same pour, and you choose between them once. Lift manufacturers publish a minimum thickness and concrete strength for each model, so if a lift is anywhere in your future, that spec belongs in the conversation before the concrete truck arrives, not after.

Worth being clear that his lift was provided by the manufacturer rather than bought. He puts its retail around $6,500 for a 9,000 pound four-post, and says the number surprised him: "at literally any point in my life I could have fixed up a car, sold it, and had a lift. I always thought they were like 10, 15,000."

What he got wrong, by his own account

Two things, and both are the kind you only find by using the building.

Fumes. Running an engine inside leaves exhaust hanging at the peak, even with the doors open. The height that makes the shop comfortable is also what gives the fumes somewhere to sit. His fix is an attic-style exhaust fan in a high corner on a switch, retrofitted.

Compressed air. There is none in the new barn. He is running a hose across the yard from the compressor in the old one, and openly unsure whether piping it over would freeze in winter or whether he should just buy a second, smaller compressor. Air is trivial to rough in during construction and annoying to add afterward.

The permit that changed the building

He did not originally want a pole barn. He poured a slab intending to bolt a steel-frame building to it, and his county refused: a building that bolts to its foundation needed an engineered foundation. So the plan became posts in dug piers instead.

His words: "it cost me quite a bit of extra money," and five miles east, in the next county, it would have been fine.

That is worth knowing before you price a build. The rules that decide your foundation are set locally, and they are not always the same as the ones a neighbour built under.

The line every builder hears

He ends the tour with this: "If I could do it over again, I would have built it bigger. But I'm pretty sure that's what everybody says, right?"

He is right that everybody says it. He is also standing in the second building he has put up on the same footprint, having spent the money to fix height, doors, and concrete rather than square footage.

So take the note, but take the specific version of it. Go taller if you will ever lift anything. Put a door on both ends if things will pass through. Pour for the heaviest thing you will ever set on the floor.
