Setting Pole Barn Posts: A $6,000 Budget Foundation

Setting the posts is the one part of a pole barn worth paying for. In a post-frame building the posts are the foundation, so when they go in square, plumb, and at the right height, everything above them (the roof, the siding, the doors) falls into place. Get them wrong and no amount of careful framing later will straighten it out.

That is why the owner in this build did most of the work himself but hired a crew for exactly one job: setting the posts on his 28x32 pole barn.

What the posts cost

He kept this build deliberately budget. For the post-setting stage, the numbers came in at:

  • Gravel: $350
  • Lumber (posts and headers): $3,100
  • Labor (the hired crew): $2,500
  • Total: about $6,000

That $6,000 is one 28x32 DIY build, with a crew brought in only to set and brace the posts. It is not a national average and it is not the whole barn. Read it as a shape, not a quote: your number moves with post size, how many posts you set, how deep the holes go, your local lumber price, and whether you dig them yourself or pay someone who does it every day.

How the posts went in

The order matters as much as the parts. Here is the sequence the crew followed.

  1. Square the footprint first. They set corner brackets, ran string lines to all four corners, then measured both diagonals of the rectangle. When the two diagonals match, the footprint is square. Everything set off those lines inherits that square: the roof, the siding, and every opening.
  2. Set the height before digging. A grade pin marked the height of the finished concrete floor. Running a rotary laser off the driveway, the owner set that floor above the driveway so water sheds away from the building instead of into it. He also faced the garage doors north, away from the prevailing western weather.
  3. Auger straight holes. The holes were drilled as plumb as the ground allowed, corners and outer posts first, then the interior line off the perimeter posts.
  4. Pad and lock the bottom. An 80-pound bag of concrete went into the bottom of each hole and was tamped flat to give the post a footing to sit on. A block at the base acts as a wedge: with concrete poured over it, the block locks the post against uplift so wind cannot pull it straight out of the ground.
  5. Plumb off the line, corners first. The corner posts are the reference for everything else. The crew marked a center line on each post to match the center of the string, plumbed left-to-right and front-to-back, and moved inward from there.
  6. Shoot one level line on every post. A rotary laser marked a common elevation on all the posts. From that single line they measured down to slab height and up to header height, so skirt boards and headers all reference the same mark.
  7. Brace it before walking away. The corners were braced so nothing shifted before the rest of the framing tied in.

The posts are the foundation

In a pole barn the posts are the foundation, and square-and-plumb at this stage is worth more than anything you do after it. A framer can hide a lot of small sins later. He cannot hide a footprint that is out of square, because it shows up in every roofline, every panel seam, and every door that will not close. This is the cheapest place in the whole project to be exact, and the most expensive place to be lazy.

That is the case for hiring this one stage. The owner DIY'd nearly the entire barn and still handed the post setting to a crew who does it daily. The reason was not muscle. It was that a crew running lines and diagonals every day will hit square faster and truer than a first-timer with a tape measure and a level.

The details worth copying

A few specifics from this build translate to almost any post-frame job:

  • 6x6 posts, not smaller. The mass matters at the base and for what bolts to it later.
  • Posts run long and get cut in place. The outer posts were 16 feet, the center posts 22 feet, with a few feet chopped off up top once the level line was shot. Buying long and trimming beats guessing a cut height at the lumberyard.
  • Header heights set the pitch. Headers at 8 feet on one side, 10 feet on the other, and 16 feet at the ridge produced a 4/12 roof pitch on both slopes. The door opening was framed 10 feet wide and 9 feet tall.
  • Permitting is local. This particular job did not require a permit, but the barn still had to be plotted on the property. Yours may need more. Check with your building department before you dig, not after.

At the base, yes, but not a full slab. This build set each 6x6 post on an 80-pound bag of concrete tamped into the bottom of the hole, with a block at the base and concrete over it to resist uplift. A floor slab, if you pour one, comes later and is a separate cost.
